Evola torrent

The Evola is a tributary stream of the Arno, a stream because in the summer season it dries up or almost, but in certain years, even in a very reduced form, it continues to have its watercourse and therefore can be classified in the superior category , that is, that of rivers.
The old name was Ebula, an Etruscan term, but over the centuries we also find Elbula and in Corazzano entering the Municipality of San Miniato it changes name and is Egola up to the mouth of the Arno in Ponte a Egola, a town that took its name from the tributary of the Arno.
The river originates from Montignoso and in the first part it crosses a large, completely wooded valley and acts as a border between the municipalities of Montaione and Gambassi Terme and receives the first subtributary, the Evoletta which comes from Orcia.

After having crossed the road that leads from Montaione to San Vivaldo, the first cultivated lands begin on the right bank until reaching the border of the municipality, passing into the Barbialla plain.
In the upper part of the Evola, where it flows between and over the rocks, its bed has deep cavities called “wells” (Pozzo Catino or Latino, Pozzo Lungo, Pozzo dei Giovanotti, Pozzo Sfondato and others that we will see here). They are deep holes in the rocky bed and always full of blue water, they never dry out, not even in summer when the Evola is low or even dry.
Only the pools, i.e. the large shallow pools, dry up and not always or completely.

Today the river offers numerous wells where you can swim and it is possible to go down and up the river, in particular it is intertwined by path no. 2 and 3.
